Benches, shelves, racks, hangers and seed beds are indispensable features of greenhouses. Hence, gardeners who have just built or purchase the sunroom of their dreams may encounter challenges pertaining to the interior design. Interior design, in this regard needs to be heavily influenced by function rather than form. Hence, there are generally no hard and fast rules to live by. Interior features can always be designed based on the needs and characteristics of the gardener.

Benches. Benches are typically 28 to 32 inches above the floor level of the greenhouse. They may, however be constructed based on the gardener’s personal specifications. For example, for those below normal height or are confined to a wheel chair, the bench height may be lowered. For convenience, the width must conform to the length of the gardener’s arm. Benches may also be made of metal, plastic, wood or bought ready made separate or together with greenhouses for sale.

Bench Tops. For durability, bench tops may be constructed from a 2 feet by 4 feet frame covered with either a 10 gauge or 12½ gauge wires, with the mesh either vinyl-coated or galvanized. For rigidity and higher strength, a ¼-inch diamond-shaped opening 13-gauge wire mesh is recommended. Emerging materials for bench tops include plastic and plastic coated wire that may also be procured ready made for convenience.

Hangers, Racks, and Shelves. This simple equipment have been very effective in maximizing the overhead space and are great aids in positioning plants which require warmer temperature, more light or both. Heavy duty hooks may be attached to the bars supporting the roof, or pipes and shelves may be attached to the walls to create more space for more plants. Garden suppliers sell brackets that may be used to fasten pipes and shelves to the walls. Moreover, a wooden step bench may be used to accommodate more plants as long as they are designed to consider the height of the plant containers.

Seed or Plant Beds. Seeds or sprouts for tall plants may be grown on beds on top of the floor or dug straight into a bare earth floor. Plastic-lined wooden frames and hydroponic arrangements are also excellent interior components for greenhouses.
